How I Do What I Do
I like every picture I draw to tell a story. I
also like to try and place some humor in the pictures.
I start with
basic sketches and try not to waste too much paper. Once I’ve found the
basic image I want to create, I then play around with giving the
character movement. Once I’ve created a final sketch, I trace it onto
Bristol paper with a Micron pen. The size of pen really depends on how
detailed I want to make things. Once I’ve finished penning I scan into
my computer as a black and white image. I work with a high resolution,
about 600 dpi. I then open the image in Photoshop and paint.
For more
information on how I paint visit the How to Paint Illustrations with
Photoshop post. Once it’s complete I have my biggest critic (my 3 year
old) tell me if the picture is good or not. If it passes inspection
then I save it as a large jpeg and start on the next. Pricing for
illustration is a hard thing for me to do. I could spend several hours
on just one page.
As a perfectionist I might go through many drafts
before I find the right fit. Of course the rates continually change as
the market changes, and I want my clients to be 100% satisfied for what
they buy.
